The Unknown History Of Mazatlan, Mexico
In the late 1820s, a Filipino arrived in the town of Mazatlan, located on the Pacific coast of Mexico. His name was Juan Machado, and he ended up creating nothing less than an attraction that has brought millions of people to this town since, everything from movie stars to miners to tourists.
The locals will tell you that Machado arrived looking to get involved with the pearl diving that is available in the area, or maybe he wanted to get involved in trade. There were silver mines near the town; perhaps he wanted a crack at those. Regardless of the reason, he arrived, and during his time there he created a plaza in the town, roughly a block long, that looked very similar to a European town squared. The square was probably ringed with walkways with porticos over them, small inns, cafes for refreshments, and shops to spend time at. It was a wonderful place where the locals could spend all day at easily.
Soon this was known as Plazuela Machado. It is rumored that he made this plaza in an attempt to draw Europeans to the area, in particular Germans, who would be willing to work the mines nearby. Whatever the reason, this is what happened. Many Germans moved in over the coming years.
These miners were around in 1849, when gold was discovered in California. There was such a wealth of miners here that steam ships would port here and look for workers willing to pay for passage north. For those who couldn’t take ships, they walked their way up, a hazardous journey.
These ships, which came from towns all across Mexico, often would stop at Mazatlan to spend a few days recuperating, which by this point could easily be called a small city. Nearly a century later, in 1920, Mazatlan became famous again, this time due to Prohibition in the United States.
With booze illegal in the US, a drinking tourism sprung up. Mazatlan turned into one of the earliest resort towns in the world, especially thanks to the nearby Olas Atlas beach.
Now the town was full of the wealthy, Hollywood stars, businessmen, and moguls of all sorts. Mazatlan had its own public relations person, Gilberto Limon, who was all too willing to boast of the star power the town was seeing. Today, the town is still beautiful, though it is not quite as quaint as it once was. Everything works and is still around the courtyard, though it doesn’t have the pull it once did.
Plaza Machado is still there, and is the center of what is now referred to as the historic district. It is lined with trees and benches, and is the cultural center of the town. It is highly popular with tourists, though many are not aware of the star power that once was here, nor do they know of the miners that were there over 150 years before.
